Do you know that Sony has introduced two brand new Cyber-shot digital cameras yesterday? The awesome news is that both compact cameras are the world’s first to support AVCHD. That’s not all; they’re also the world’s thinnest and smallest AVCHD-enabled cameras! Read on for more.

What the heck is AVCHD?

AVCHD stands for Advanced Video Codec High Definition. I’m pretty angry with The Herald at the moment, not in the mood to blog as I usually do, so please do some reading at Wikipedia to know more about this HD video format.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V and DSC-TX7 noteworthy features

Here are few more firsts for both compact cameras; they’re the first Cyber-shot cameras to integrate the in-camera Backlight Correction High Dynamic Range feature, a feature that will help users take photos in difficult lighting environments. Both compacts are also the first Cyber-shot cameras to integrate the TransferJet wireless technology that enables users to share, store and view images wirelessly. Wait, here’s another world’s first according to Sony. Sony says that Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V is the first to include GPS + Compass and Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode technologies.

The features that caught my attention the most are the cameras’ ability to shoot AVCHD videos/movies in 1920 x 1080 and create seamless and natural looking panoramic photos. Sony has equips both Cyber-shot cameras with an Intelligent Sweep Panorama feature that helps users capture landscapes or towering skyscrapers with only one ‘press and sweep’ motion. Don’t worry about spending time on stitching those photos yourself because the Intelligent Sweep Panorama feature will do it for you! Isn’t that nice!?

Sony says that both Cyber-shot cameras will be available in the first half of 2010 (anywhere between February and March) and should retail at anywhere between $350 to $400.
