World’s first 2 Terabyte 7200 RPM hard disk

Do you know that Hitachi is in the process of shipping out the world’s 1st 2TB 7200 RPM 3.5” hard disk?

You probably have seen 7200 RPM hard disks before but Hitachi has the world’s first 2TB hard disk (Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000) running at 7200 RPM. Most other Terabyte hard disks have anywhere between 5400 to 5900 RPMs.

Is it a big deal?

I don’t know but I do know that I have a lot of bad experience with Hitachi hard disks (sorry, Hitachi). Based upon its existing datasheet, I can see that Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 is one mean hard disk, boasting of SATA II (3 Gbit/s transfer rate). That’s really fast for desktop hard disk!

I wonder if a RAID array of Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 hard disks can beat the awesome speed of a RAID array of Samsung SSDs (Solid-state drives)? We may never know but Samsung sure gave us a shock when they revealed the world’s fastest PC early this year! :)
