Yes, screencasting is very popular among top internet marketers and everybody knows that they use Camtasia Studio to help them market their products and services via screencast videos. There’s no surprise there since Camtasia Studio is the premier screencasting tool, much to the delight of TechSmith (its developer).
But not everybody is willing to fork out $299 (as of time of writing) to have Camtasia Studio. Only those who rely heavily upon screencasting do.
Well then, do we have a cheaper alternative for those unwilling to use Camtasia Studio?
Of course there is (there are plenty actually). As matter of fact, you don’t have to spend any money on it. It is totally free and the funny thing is that it is provided by the very same team that developed Camtasia Studio and SnagIt (currently priced at $49.95)!
The free alternative is Jing Project and people can use it on Mac or Windows. Personally, I feel that Jing Project is a stripped-down version of Camtasia Studio and SnagIt. You can do both screen capturing and screen recording with Jing Project but some great features that you normally see on Camtasia Studio and SnagIt won’t be there.
Yet that doesn’t mean you cannot do great screencast videos with Jing Project. I have seen a few cool Jing Project screencast videos made by a Japanese manga artist. With a little imagination, you can do it too. :-)

By the way Techsmith didn't discontinue the promotion because too many people took advantage of it. They never intended to offer the Camtasia 3 forever.
