Sunlight-illuminated LCD panel

LG Display has developed LCD panels for laptops that are illuminated by sunlight instead of backlights when used outdoors.

LG Display describes their new LCD technology as ‘Backlight Data Signal Switching Technology’ (…use of selective reflection plates in existing backlight panels…), giving laptops users the ability to switch from backlight-illuminated to sunlight-illuminated (outdoor reflective mode) screen at a touch of a button (no auto detection?). LG Display’s new technology will also one day increases battery life (sunlight-illuminated LCD panel requires less energy) and improves visibility (sunlight-illuminated LCD panel has higher contrast ratios than common LCD panels).

Take note that LG Display will show off its 14.1-inch sunlight-illuminated LCD panel in the upcoming CES 2009. Can’t wait to see the real thing!
