Google Desktop 5.8: Faster & Smarter than previous releases

Google is making lots of news today.

Other than announcing the upcoming roll out of Quality Score improvements, Google also announced the release of Google Desktop 5.8, touted to be faster and leaner than previous releases.

Google Desktop 5.8 has numerous other new features but there is one that I particularly like. Google Desktop 5.8 will include a new system that can detect bad gadgets that are bringing down computers and prompt users to remove them. This is a great new feature and I’m sure that many users will appreciate it.

We've been able to immediately fix changes that decreased performance, and learn from changes that improved performance. For example:

We found a way to cut memory usage during startup by about 50%.

Shutdown now happens five times faster, and we were able to avoid a seemingly innocuous state that would have almost doubled startup time.

I’m glad to see that Google has listened to every feedback given by existing Google Desktop users in the past. Well done, Google!
